Fortuna
Fortuna (equivalent to the Greek goddess Tyche) was originally the goddess of fertility, prosperity, and chance, later becoming the goddess of luck and embodiment of fortune in Roman religion, which remained popular through the Middle Ages at least until the Renaissance.
Jupiter's daughter was generous like her father, but unpredictable. Her representation with blindfolded eyes is still an important figure in many aspects of today's culture and daily life. The Latin saying 'Fortuna caeca est' - 'Fortune (the goddess) is blind' is used in dozens of languages around the world.
Fortune is often depicted with a ship's helm, a ball, a wheel of fortune, and a horn of plenty, from which she seemingly blindly distributes abundance. She could bring good or bad luck and as we still say today: »Fortune and misfortune are two buckets in the same well.«
